History
The Porsche 356 was the company's first production automobile. Designed by Ferdinand "Ferry" Porsche, the 356 was a lightweight, rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car available in hardtop coupé and open-top configurations. Production began in 1948 in Gmünd, Austria, and moved to Stuttgart, Germany in 1950. Over its 17-year production run, the 356 evolved through several series—Pre-A, A, B, and C—with each iteration refining performance and comfort. The 356 established Porsche's reputation for precision engineering and motorsport success, winning the 1951 Le Mans 24 Hours in its class.
What Makes It Special
The 356 is the car that started it all for Porsche. Its timeless design, air-cooled flat-four engine, and lightweight construction created a driving experience unlike anything else of its era. The 356 Speedster, with its low-cut windshield and minimalist interior, has become one of the most iconic sports cars ever built. Values for well-documented examples have been climbing steadily, making the 356 both a rewarding driver and a sound investment. The Carrera variants with their four-cam engines are among the most collectible Porsches in existence.

Buying Guide & Tips
Rust is the 356's biggest enemy. Inspect the floor pans, rocker panels, battery box area, and front trunk floor meticulously. A magnet can help detect body filler hiding rust repairs.
Matching numbers matter enormously for value. Verify the engine, transmission, and body number stamps against the Kardex (Porsche's factory build record).
Pre-A models (1948-1955) are the rarest and most valuable. The Speedster body style commands a significant premium across all years.
Mechanical components are generally robust, but parts can be expensive. Join the 356 Registry for access to parts sources and technical information.
Be wary of Speedster replicas built on Beetle platforms. Always verify authenticity with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity or the 356 Registry.
