History
When Porsche announced an SUV in the early 2000s, purists were horrified. Yet the Cayenne became the model that saved the company from potential financial ruin and funded the development of future sports cars. The first-generation Cayenne (955/957) launched in 2002 sharing a platform with the VW Touareg but with distinctly Porsche performance. The second generation (958) arrived in 2010 with significant weight reduction and improved dynamics. The third generation, launched in 2018, moved to the MLB Evo platform and set new benchmarks for SUV performance. The Cayenne Turbo GT, with 631 hp, even held the Nürburgring SUV lap record.
What Makes It Special
The Cayenne proved that Porsche could build an SUV without compromising its sports car DNA. It handles like no other SUV, offering genuinely engaging driving dynamics combined with everyday practicality and genuine off-road capability. The Cayenne Turbo and Turbo S variants deliver supercar acceleration in a package that can tow a boat and seat five. For many enthusiasts, the Cayenne is the perfect gateway into Porsche ownership, offering the brand's legendary build quality and performance at accessible price points, especially on the used market.

Buying Guide & Tips
First-generation (955) Cayennes are cheap but can be expensive to maintain. Coolant pipe failures, transfer case issues, and air suspension problems are common.
The Cayenne Turbo S (any generation) is the performance sweet spot. The twin-turbo V8 delivers incredible thrust while maintaining Porsche refinement.
Check the air suspension thoroughly on all models—replacement air struts cost $1,500-$3,000+ each.
Service history is paramount. A Cayenne with full Porsche dealer service records is worth significantly more than one serviced at independent shops.
The third-generation (2019+) Cayenne is vastly improved in every metric. If budget allows, the current model offers the best ownership experience.
