History
The Cayman debuted in 2005 as the hardtop sibling of the Boxster, featuring a mid-engine layout that many consider the ideal sports car configuration. The first generation (987) offered flat-six power ranging from 245 to 330 hp in the S and R variants. The 981 generation improved refinement, while the 718 Cayman controversially switched to turbocharged flat-four engines. The GT4 and GT4 RS variants reintroduced the flat-six with spectacular results—the GT4 RS packing a 493-hp 4.0-liter engine derived from the 911 GT3. Many driving purists consider the Cayman the best-handling car Porsche makes.
What Makes It Special
The Cayman offers what many consider the purest Porsche driving experience available. Its mid-engine layout provides perfect weight distribution and handling balance that even the 911 can't match. The Cayman GT4 and GT4 RS are widely regarded as two of the greatest driver's cars ever made, offering motorsport-derived performance at a fraction of GT3 RS pricing. Even the base Cayman provides an incredibly rewarding driving experience with excellent daily usability, reasonable running costs, and that unmistakable Porsche quality.

Buying Guide & Tips
The 987.2 Cayman S (2009-2012) with the DFI engine is often considered the sweet spot—reliable flat-six power, great handling, and reasonable prices.
IMS bearing issues affect 987.1 models (2005-2008). Verify if the IMS bearing has been replaced with an upgraded unit before purchasing.
The 718 Cayman's turbo flat-four engine is mechanically sound but divides opinion on exhaust note. The GTS 4.0 and GT4 restore the flat-six for those who prefer it.
Cylinder scoring (bore scoring) can affect some flat-six Cayman engines. A pre-purchase borescope inspection is strongly recommended.
The Cayman GT4 is rapidly appreciating. Low-mileage, well-optioned examples—especially with manual transmission—are strong investment picks.
